North Atlantic Grey Seals : North Atlantic Grey Seals in pupping season. This particular colony live on a small section of the vast Norfolk coastline,and pup in the same area every year. The mothers are very nervous and will leave the pups for the safety of the water if scared and the pups die. The particular area of beach that these seals pup on happens to cross the border of two different Local Authorities. As you can imagine seal pups are very cute and do,unfortunately, attract a fair amount of visitors. Now this is the crazy thing. The Local Authority on the northern part of the site fences of the area so nosy ignorant humans cannot get too close and scare the mothers into leaving the pups, but the Council controlling the southern end does not care for the welfare of wildlife and so there are no fences or wardens. So what we have is a colony of breeding seals, that for some reason does not respect human boundaries, half of them are protected and half are not. The morning that I took the majority of these pictures,we watched a group of joggers running along the southern unprotected part of the beach dodging the pups while the mothers scrambled for the water, and when these morons got to the fences of the protected area they moved to the dunes and respected the rope boundary. WTF. These were not the only idiots we saw that day either. We saw people and unbelievably parents with children trying to pet the pups. Even other photographers were getting to within spitting distance of the poor terrified pups, for so that oh so good close up shot. Now before you all start screaming hypocrite all these pictures where taken with a 300mm lens from the cover of the dunes! You can see from the pictures that the animals are quite relaxed,because we were quiet and still and kept our distance. Common sense really!! Being the nature loving people that we are, we caused a stink about this crazy attitude to the protection of this breeding colony, even to the extent of having a piece done in the local press. A year on and nothing has changed!!! We no longer live in Norfolk and cannot have any direct involvement,but we live in hope that the local muppets will see sense.
